When a major automotive OEM was developing a new center console platform, their engineering team faced a unique challenge. The console lid required a spring-assisted hinge to provide a premium user experience, while simultaneously allowing a heating duct to pass directly through the hinge assembly. Traditional hinge designs could not accommodate both requirements without compromising performance, packaging space, or manufacturability.

ER Wagner partnered with the customer early in the design process to develop an innovative solution. Our engineering team created a new hinge architecture featuring a split-pin design with integrated spring-loaded spool pins. This approach allowed the HVAC ducting to pass through the hinge while maintaining the desired opening force, durability, and functionality.

Working closely with the customer's engineers, ER Wagner guided the project from initial concept through prototype development, testing, validation, and full-scale production. The resulting design successfully met all performance requirements while fitting within the tight packaging constraints of the vehicle interior.

A leading door and window manufacturer was experiencing challenges on their assembly line related to the installation of continuous hinges. The existing process required specialized fixturing and manual alignment to ensure proper hinge placement, creating bottlenecks in production and increasing setup time.

Rather than simply supplying a standard hinge, ER Wagner worked closely with the customer to understand the manufacturing process and identify opportunities for improvement. After evaluating the application, our engineering team developed a custom continuous hinge incorporating integrated positive locating features directly into the hinge design.

These built-in guides allowed operators to quickly and accurately position the hinge during assembly without the need for dedicated jigs or fixtures.
