E.R. Wagner Wrapped Tubes Replace Cut Tubes made in China
E.R. Wagner recently started production on two wrapped spacers used in an automotive application. The parts were previously purchased from a Chinese company who made them from cut tubing and they were resourced to E.R. Wagner as a cost savings.
ER Wagner can provide wrapped tubular components, with a butted or locked seam, incorporating tolerances in line with drawn tubing. Our unique processes eliminate costly secondary operations such as piercing and notching by incorporating them in the flat before strip material is rolled. This saves you money without compromising part quality or integrity

Redesign Yields Customer Cost Savings
An E.R. Wagner Engineered Products Division cost savings proposal resulted in a customer savings of well over $100,000 a year.
The customer was buying a deep drawn stamping whereby a cup was drawn and the bottom pierced out to form a sleeve. As is typical with the deep draw process, the sidewall thinned out near the bottom of the part. While this was acceptable at first, an engineering change to a mating component made full metal thickness a necessity.
To solve the problem, E.R. Wagner suggested a wrapped sleeve with a lock seam running the length of the part. By piercing slots and coining edges in the flat blank prior to wrapping, costly secondary operations were avoided. In addition to piece cost savings, E.R. Wagner’s new tool charge was substantially less then the cost to rework exisitng tools. After E.R. Wagner produced prototypes passed stringent customer testing, our proposal was accepted and we were awarded the business.
To see what kinds of cost savings you can realize by converting deep drawn stampings or DOM tubular components to wrapped, contact E.R. Wagner Engineered Products Division.

Redesign Reduces Customer Cost.
E.R. Wagner Engineered Products Division started working with a major automotive seat supplier in the spring of 2007 helping them resolve a head restraint design issue.
The OEM seat specification left few options for the head restraint design and it appeared a heavy, one piece stamped component was the only way to go. Our engineers reviewed the specifications and suggested a number of low cost alternatives.
After careful review, the customer selected a 2-piece design that incorporated a wrapped tube welded to a simple stamped bracket. The design saved cost and weight without jeopardizing the integrity of the head restraint. Prototypes were ordered, tested, revised and tested again. The design passed all test criteria and when released for production, E.R Wagner was awarded both parts.

VAVE Proposal Accepted
An E.R. Wagner Engineered Products Division VAVE proposal was recently accepted and approved by our customer. When they incorporate the change this fall, they will realize substantial cost savings from lower part cost and higher production throughput.
The existing part, a double-flanged deep drawn tube, was pressed into a laser cut hole and welded in place. Since the tube O.D. could not meet the exacting tolerances of the laser cut, costly production downtime was incurred as the laser was adjusted.
E.R. Wagner's proposal called for replacing the drawn tube with a wrapped tube and welding a stamped "washer" to replace the flange. Structural integrity was maintained, O.D. tolerance was held and features such as a locating notch and coined edges were stamped in the flat, all at a lower component cost with higher production throughput. After building and submitting production intent prototypes to our customer, they worked with their customer to test and approve the design.
To see what E.R. Wagner Engineered Products Division can do to reduce your tubular component costs, please contact us at your earliest convenience.

Shop Upgrades Continue With 5S Projects
5S teams continue to upgrade our facility and the entire shop makeover is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2007. So far, participation and results have been excellent. Evaluation scores based on the Lean Scorecard have more than doubled in areas addressed by the teams and ongoing evaluations show a high level of sustained improvements.
A recent project in the Airbag Housing Cell realized improvements in productivity, quality, organization, and communication. The team also implemented adjustable pallet tables contributing to improved safety and reduced fatigue. Steve Schroeder, team member and Setup/Operator in the area says, “The Airbag Housing Cell has come a long way and when the few remaining action items are completed, it should be the crown jewel of the shop”.

VAVE Results in New Work.
E.R Wagner Engineered Products Division was recently awarded new work based on a VAVE proposal they made to replace two cut DOM tubes, post case hardened, with wrapped tubes run from High Strength Low Alloy steel. Since coil steel is much less expensive then DOM tubing and HSLA eliminates the need for case hardening, customer savings would be over $150,000 a year.
After E.R. Wagner built and submitted production intent prototypes, its customer conducted rigorous testing and approved the design for production. Tooling was built, PPAP samples were run, submitted and approved and production shipments started less than 8 weeks after receipt of the purchase order.
Our streamlined approach to launching new work allowed this customer, a major automotive supplier, to quickly take advantage of significant cost savings. Helping customers exceed their cost reduction goals is one of the many ways E.R. Wagner adds value.
